How do I re-baseline a project schedule?

M

minniebe

I have been tasked to re-baseline a project. Can someone provide me with an
overview of the steps necessary to do this?
I also will be deleting some tasks that have predecessors. Will this create
a problem with the associated tasks and their dates?
Thanks for all your help!

I try to replace all links before I remove any tasks, just seems easier
to figure them out then rather than after the tasks are gone.
Everything in the schedule, except possibly meetings, should be linked
again when you're done. Then just do the same steps you did when you
originally baselined. If you want to save the original baseline before
you re-baseline, just go into the Baseline dialog box and copy the
current baseline into another set of Baseline data, then re-baseline.

Hope this helps in your world.

So to rebaseline a schedule I:
1. Clear my original baseline
2. Delete unnecessary tasks
3. Add any new tasks
4. Update old start and finish dates
5. Reestablish my links (predecessors)
6. Save my new baseline.

Being new to project. I would appreciate step by step answers.
Thanks for all your help

[Julie] It is not necessary to clear the original baseline. If you
re-baseline, it will overwrite your original baseline. If you are using
Project 2002 or 2003 and you want to preserve your original baseline,
you can copy the original baseline to another Baseline field (for
example Baseline1) using Tools > Tracking > Save Baseline, Save interim
plan and copy Baseline into Baseline1.
2. Delete unnecessary tasks

[Julie] Yes.
3. Add any new tasks

[Julie] Yes.
4. Update old start and finish dates

[Julie] Not sure what you mean here. You should not be entering start
and finish dates into Project. In a project plan scheduled from a start
date (entered in Project > Project Information), entering a start date
creates a Start No Earlier Than constraint and entering a finish date
creates a Finish No Earlier Than constraint. Where at all possible, the
start and finish dates of your tasks should be calculated by MS Project
based upon the Start Date of the Project, the working time as set in the
project calendar, the duration of the tasks, the predecessor/successors
(links) between tasks, and the calendar of the resources assigned.
5. Reestablish my links (predecessors)

[Julie] Yes.
6. Save my new baseline.

[Julie] Correct.
Being new to project. I would appreciate step by step answers.
Thanks for all your help

[Julie] You're welcome and I hope this helps. Let us know how you get
along.
