How do I resolve a Word start-up error

I got this problem with Word in Office 2003, when I double-click word, it
doesn't start up, instead the computer freezes, then, after I unfreeze the
computer, I can double click word and it will ask if I want to enter
"safe-mode" and I do this, then I can use word, why can't it start up
normally the first time?
