Installed Office 2003 & cannot open app files

T

Tom

I recently upgraded from Office 2000, and installed MS Office Pro 2003 (MS
Home Use Program) that I checked out from my employer. Since doing so, I
cannot open any files in any application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc). I
get different messages, depending on the application, but here are some
examples: Word - The File <filename> is not available. PP - PowerPoint
cannot read <filename>. Excel - The file cannot be opened because your
virous scanner has detected a problem witht the file. As a side note, I also
get the following message when I close Word - The file normal already exists.
Do you want to replace the file? Since I cannot access anything with any of
the Office applications, my thinking is that I have an Office problem.

Help?

Yes you certainly have an Ofice problem. Have you got your CDs with
you? If so then try doing Detect and Repair by going to:

Help, Detect and Repair (this is a special item in the help menu)

Click on it and let the system restores all missing files. If the
MSOCache isn't on the HD (normally hidden folder on C:\) then you will
need your CDs otherwise, the system will repair the installation from
the cache files.

As to Normal.dot repalce prompt, I suggest go to:

Tools, Options, Save

Now under Save Options, there is an item called "Prompt to save Normal
template". Just uncheck this and OK it.

Thanks very much for the advice with this, as it has been quite frustrating.

I had checked in the knowledge base from MS, but was unable to find the
exact message, only one having to do with "patches".

I do have the Office 2003 CD. From where do I go to the Help, Detect,
Repair? Is that in each application, or somewhere in the Office setup?

Thanks again.

I loaded the Office 2003 CD, then went to Word, to the Help, Detect & Repair.
I see that it says it will repair all Office problems. I ran that repair,
then tried Word again, with the same result.

I also checked the Tools, Options, Save, then the "Prompt to save Normal
template". It was unchecked, so I checked it, did the OK, then closed Word,
reopened it, then went back in and unchecked the "Prompt to save normal
template", and tried to close Word again. Saw the same result again, with
the "The file normal already exists. Do you want to replace the file?" set
of messages. I am currently trying the repair, along with selecting the
"restore defaults" checked, although I had originally done a normal
installation to begin
with. Well, that is now done, same result.

Must be something else, or I am the problem. (Naaa..., that couldn't be it)
