Link display: Is there a way to...

display a link from a milestone on a summary bar to some subordinate
activity?

This is not about scheduling - it's a display-to-management graphic
requirement. It is possible to roll up a milestone and link from it to
other tasks, but the dependency lines to the other tasks are drawn
from the milestone's base symbol - rather than its rolled up image -
which is not helpful.

If this can't be done with a rolled up milestone, is there a way to
display a dummy milestone on a summary bar and link from it to
whatever?

I need to automate a way of doing this, and I can do so in PowerPoint,
but if Project can do it it would save me a bunch of coding.

Thanks
Dave

Dave,
No and no. Project IS about scheduling and not about preparing pretty
charts for management.

You mentioned PowerPoint. There is an add-in for Project that will dump
Project data into PowerPoint. I don't know if it will do what you want,
(I suspect not), but you can give it a try. Go to our MVP website at,
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm, and take a look at FAQ 16 -
Project viewer.

Thanks, John. I didn't mean to suggest that Project isn't about
scheduling, just that my present assignment is to make pretty charts
for management automatically on a continuing basis. From the
description of the PowerPoint add-in it doesn't look like it will do
what I need, but I've been making Project do things it doesn't want to
for years, so maybe I can figure out a workaround for this one as
well...

Another product listed on that page is Kidasa Milestones.
The latest version is Milestones 2006 .... it makes greate eye candy.http://www.kidasa.com
They have a trial version.

http://www.kidasa.com/information/products/professionalIndex.html
And look on the right side.

I have been using this on and off for about 3 years and the management seems
to like it.

Thanks, Jim - I have used Milestones off and on for several years.
You're right - it may be the answer for what I need . I'll have
another look.

Dave,
It's been several years since I used Milestones and I'm sure it has been
updated but I do not know if it will allow links from the middle of
summary lines - I suspect not. However, I do know Project will NOT
create link lines to the middle of a summary bar, or any bar for that
matter.

However, not to be foiled. If you know some VBA, you could automate a
pretty picture type of management presentation with whatever graphics
you need using Project data and an application with more flexible
graphics than Project (e.g. PowerPoint). And I think that was your end
goal.

John,
That was my thinking - I am a developer, but like most am always
looking for easier ways to do things. I'll probably forge ahead with
PowerPoint using data from Project.

Thanks

Dave,
OK, and good luck with automating the process. If you would like some
help with Project's objects in VBA, fellow MVP, Rod Gill has an
excellent book on Project VBA. For more information see,
