Looking for tutorial ???

I have recently purchased FP2003 and am a bit befuddled
with how to get started. I have Photoshop experience and
struggle a bit, but always get done what I need.

I find FP's lack of explanation for terms and how to use
them remarkable. How do frames, tables, cels, layers columns,
relate. I've been doing a trial and error learning process
and getting mostly errors. I end up with a page full of
b&w dotted lines, blue lines, green lines, and great
difficulty nailing images in the places I want them. Some
tables are visible in preview mode and some aren't. Some
things I want to move I can't and some things I want
stationary move on me. Help please

You're not the first to feel this way, and yes
learning the terminology is quite a hurdle.

I would suggest buying a copy of the book
FrontPage 2003 Inside Out buy Jim Buyens.
It covers everything.

Most software these days does not come with a manual and
that makes it extremely difficult to get started on your
own.

I would suggest you head to your favorite bookstore and
pick up a book about Front Page 2003. I bought Jim
Buyen's book "Microsoft Front Page 2003 Inside Out" but
Jim Cheshire also has a good book on the subject. Both
gentlemen proovide assistance on this newsgroup.

The frustration you describe is very common among new Web
designers, especially those coming from other media. You
simply can't arrange objects on a Web page the same way
that you can in programs like PowerPoint, Publisher, and
Visio.

Instead, you draw HTML tables and use them like a
newspaper layout grid. Even then, you never know how wide
the visitor's browser window will be, or at which size
they've decided to display fonts.

Here's a link that might help you avoid some pitfalls.

Hi Steve,
everyone here has been through that learning process - I've heard lots of
good things about Jim Buyens book so you could do a lot worse than to get
yourself a copy. Or browse the tutorials here
http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/topcategory.aspx?TopLevelCat=CH79001803
they should be enough to get you started

If you get stuck on anything just post back here - or better still
microsoft.public.frontpage.client which is the best group for general
questions and we'll help you out

Thanks Jim and others. I'll follow your link, and perhaps
be buying your book.

Humor me...

Use FrontPage 2003 to open the help file and enter the word: forms
into the textbox displayed in the 'task pane' and conduct a search.
That's one of the terms you asked about.

Scroll a bit and read the 'About Forms' entry then tell me that Microsoft
has not done an outstanding job.

If you want to learn about FrontPage 2003 I'm telling you the facts
of life. Microsoft develops the best help and support resources on the
planet and with Office Systems 2003 and live connections to the web
there's no book on the planet in this class of application that can even
come close to the help file systems that are now being provided
with Office Systems 2003.

That was more helpful, thanks. I had spent two days
tracking down help menu and links to online help without
finding the most basic explanations in dummie terms that
don't require prior use of web design software or ability
to write code.

This is what a table is for. Heres how to make one. This
is how you move it. This is how you resize it. This is how
you delete it.

This is what a cel is for. Heres how to make one. this is
how you move it. This is how you center it. This is how
you center info within it. This is how you delete it.

If you want a photo in the center of a page here is what
you need to do.

I understand it's a fairly powerful and flexible piece of
software. I understand that if I tried to start at ground
zero with Autocad or Photoshop or Pixar's animation
software I'd be in trouble too. The glossery included in
FrontPage does not offer much help in trying to learn
these most basic terms. Try and pretend you are once again
a complete beginer with no teacher and look up "table"
and "cel"

Regards

Steve
