Lost files

I was renaming directories and moving files (both word and excel). After
doing so, the folders are there, but in some of them the files are missing.
I did a search for the files and I can't find them anywhere on the hard
drive. Any suffestions

Restore them from the backup you made before you started mucking around with
them.
