Microsoft Office has stopped working

Everytime I start MSWORD 2007 on my Vista 32 HP laptop I cannot use my mouse
to navigate the work program document and the Word document reports it Has
stopped working. I receive the following message when exiting or trying to
save my document in Word.

Microsoft Office has stopped working
Windows is checking for a solution to the problem

When I close this error message window I receive the following message.

Microsoft Office has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close
the program and notify you if a solution is available.

This just started happening after downloading Business Manager and Starlight
onto my system about four days ago. I have tried having office diagnose the
problem to no avail and today tried using the OEM software CD to repair the
problem, also to no avail.

This does not happen in any of my other MSOffice programs (i.e. Excel,
Access, Publisher, etc.)

I have not experienced this problem in the many years (approx. 20) that I
have used MS Word on many different hardware, both OEM and user purchased
copies, on every MS Windows OS since its release.

This is very frustrating and calls into question my confidence with Vista
and MSOffice 2007.

Delete the Word DataKey from the registry. It will be recreated when you
restart Word.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data

I am having the same problems and read the answer, but don't know where I
"delete the WOrd Datakey" is located. Can you please explain?

It is in the Windows registry and you need to use the run command to launch
registry editor: use Winkey+R and type in

regedit

and press enter. Navigate your way to the DataKey and delete it.

Terry Farrell...you STILL rock.

I just had the same error (which you helped me fix 1 month ago).

Any idea why, only a month later, I had the same issue? Is there something
(maintenance-wise) I should be doing? Whether you know of anything or not -
thanks so much.

I'm sorry to be so dense but I cannot find Datakey. I can run regedit ok and
now I know to double-click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then to double-click on
SOFTWARE. I wasn't really sure where to go from there but kept expanding
folders relating to Microsoft Office all the way to Word, but I never found
anything called Datakey. I'm feeling dumb and desperate. Hope someone can
spell things out really specifically for me. Thanks!

THE DATAKEY is the final bit you get to when drilling down... that is
everything under DATA is the Word DataKey. Obviously, the version for Word
2007 is 12.0. So when you see Data, just click on it and press delete.

Thank you! In case there are other newbies reading this, there was nothing
obvious to me about the version for Word 2007 being 12.0. Once I knew that,
though, the fix was immediate so I'm grateful!

Hey, I am also having the same problem but I deleted the data key and the
options key and the problem still persists. Also, I have tried to rename them
too olddata and oldoptions, which didn't work either. I noticed there are 2
active plug in's in word. The 2 are a Google add-in and the other is the
xps-pdf add in so that word can read PFD's. Any idea's of where I should go
from here?
