Multi-locational Project Server Access

R

Rajat

Hi,

I have read a lot of posts in this group for multi-location project
server access, with people trying out replication and Gary's and others
comments that PS was not designed for replication and we should use
terminal services as a workaround.

I have a few questions here:

1. Is there any document published by Microsoft that *specifically*
states that *Project server is not designed or meant to be used for
replication or replication is not recommended*. If so, please give me a
link to that.

2. If we use terminal service for connecting to project professional,
then the manager would need to access the PWA also thru the terminal
service, bcos when updates are received in PWA and the manager accepts
it, then PWA automatically opens up the Project Pro to reflect the
updates. So is the assumption correct that the manager will use PWA
also through terminal services?

3. Has anybody so far successfully used replication for the
multi-location scenario?

Thanx,
Rajat.

It's in the documentation somewhere, I know I've seen it, but you need to do
your own leg work or orchestrate your own baptism by fire if you're
unwilling to take our word for it. Besides, Terminal Services is such an
easy, elegant solution, especially with the remote desktop client. I suppose
you object to the price advantage over another SQL license, too?

Yes, when processing updates, Project and Project Web Access must run in the
same session, otherwise they can't communicate with each other as this
process requires.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your speedy response.

I do take your word for it, but then I have to satisfy my organization
top management that replication is not recommended and you know a
document published by microsoft specifically stating this can do a
world of good for my case or for that matter anybody who plans on going
in for replication. I have gone through microsoft docs online but have
not been able to locate anything on non-recommendation of replication
for Project Server, infact it has not talked about replication
anywhere.
If you do happen to locate it somewhere, please send a link across, it
will be of great help.

Thanks,
Rajat.

There was a woman posting about her disastrous attempt to do this within the
last 30 days. That should be fairly convincing. I think you can get away
with replication if it's strictly one-way and for viewing only, but that's
not what you want. The nature of the database and the application
architecture make it impossible. The system barely gets by updating one
database.

Bill I went through the docs once again especially the config planning
guide, however could not still locate where it has been written about
replication not being supported.
There is a section on "Supporting Multiple Locations" which talks about
not supporting distributed Project Server components across
geographical locations, but nothing in terms of replication.

Thanx,
Rajat
