Multilevel Resource Grouping Functionality

Kevin

I would like to see multilevel Resource Grouping functionality implemented in
MS Project/ Project Server. By Resource Grouping I mean the ability to assign
individuals to Groups based on skill or qualification level, and order of
precedence (preferred resource first).

For instance, in our facility we have a machine shop with seven large CNC
machines and a small traditional machine shop, but not all of our machinists
are qualified to run every machine. In fact qualifications are so diverse
that machinists cannot be grouped in standard grades such as Machinist A,
Machinist B, etc...

The functionality would need to support creating Group Resources that can
contain any number of individual resources sorted in preferential order. The
individual resources should be able to be used in other Group Resources as
well, and finally those resources could be linked to a Primary Resource such
as a machine, or assigned concurrently with another resource. This way an
individual could be included in groups for all of the machines they are
qualified to operate, and be utilized within the confines of their
availability. The functionality would also allow for more than one Group
Resource to be assigned to a Primary Resource as needed in order to perform
functions that require differing skill sets in order to complete a task.

Finally the Work Hrs, Actual Hrs, and Costs could be specified to be
aggregated at the individual and/or primary resource in order to allow proper
accounting of those measures based on individual business practices.

As a side note. This functionality is available in Lilly Software's Visual
Enterprise manufacturing product. A review of their product will reveal the
extent of this functionality.

Best Regards,

Kevin

Hi,

Much of it exists also in Microsoft's AXAPTA product, also in the Production
series.

I see what you mean. Well we're not gonna buy AXTAPA, we are already on JD
Edwards, so I'll just hope for the best and muddle through in the meantime.
Maybe I'll see if I can code something that will work. In my non-existent
spare time

Thanks again,

Kevin
