New user - help

Hi there - I am very much a pc novice. What I need is a very very basic
database, just names, addresses etc. I want someone else to be able to
access it remotely so have put it in my 'briefcase' - probably another way of
doing it but this seemed simplest. What I need to know is

a) Can I use Access to send emails to everybody in my database?
b) can I add documents, e.g. I want to be able to add people's cvs.

Many thanks! And if anyone knows of a very good tutorial aimed at compelte
beginners to Access I'd be grateful for details

Hello Jill,

Yes, Access can send emails, but it requires some tweaking and use of code
from Windows (specifically the API or Application Programming Interface) to
work. I have done it with Visual Basic, but not Access. I know it can be
done, however.

I don't know of any tutorials, but the Beginning Access 2000 Development by
Alison Balter might be a good book to look into...(it's heavy though :)
perhaps your local library has a copy? I don't know of any sites, etc. but I
also know there is software out there that does an interactive tutorials.
Try Googling (www.google.com) for Access <whatever version you have>
tutorials and see what they come up with. A good guess is: Amazon probably
has some for a reasonable price.

As for remote use of the data, well My Briefcase is old too. After Windows
NT and 98 (maybe ME, not sure) they changed it to "My Shared Documents".
Perhaps you could post it to FTP or website to allow users to share it and
get at it. The best way to 'share' it is over a network but if you don't
have one, that's kind of hard! :)

HTH,

Gary

Jill, I suspect that you may be getting into the deep end of the pool
if this is your first experience with Access: this can be done, but I
suspect that Access isn't really the simplest or best tool for this!

Could you consider using Outlook (which has quite a good address list
feature) to keep track of your names and addresses?
