Numbering and formatting

I use Word XP to type tests. My questions are in 2
columns, using the column formatting available in Word. I
place directions as Level 1 outline, questions as level 2,
and choices as level 3. At times it is necessary to enter
a column break to keep all of the choices with a question
or leave enough room to work the math problem.

The only problem is, when I put a text box near a question
that has been moved via column break, the number for the
question will often jump back to the bottom of the
previous column.

I think part of the problem may be that I insert the
column break between the outline number and the text. Is
there a way to insert a column break in front of the
outline number? Or a way to prevent the number from
jumping if I keep the column breaks they way they are?

Instead of using a column break, you might consider applying "Keep with
next" formatting to your question and all the answers but the last one.
