Office apps slow to open

B

Bark Eater

I'm having a problem opening word documents from outside of Word or Excel.
For some reason, I have no problem opening the same documents from within the
"Open Documents" menu inside word or excel....It's only outside of these
programs that I have a problem. Usually I can just click on the icon on my
desktop or in a folder, and this both opens a new MS Word window. But now,
when I do this, my computer pauses for about two minutes and then sometimes,
or sometimes not, opens the file.

I have tried turning off antivirus software, but to no avail.

Can someone please help???

I scan old newsgroup postings for those that have only their initial
inquiry, to determine why no one reacted to your question, issue, or concern.
If you have not already resolved your problem "Office apps slow to open"
(dated 12/19/2004), I have a suggestion.
Double-clicking an icon has Windows pick up the file type (.doc or
..xls) and scans an internal relationship table to determine which application
uses this file type. Right-click one of your document files. The window
pane that opens should contain an option "Open With" - click that. When the
Open With window opens, observe the number of applications currently
registered under Windows. If this is a very long list, it may be a symptom
of your time-delay problem.
Another test. Go to any window, click View, Folder Options (depending
on your operating system, it may be under a different menu pull-down). Click
the File Types tab and scroll down to one of the file types giving you the
time-delay (.doc or .xls or .ppt). Look to see if anything looks unusual
like .doc being opened by Excel or .xls files being opened by Winword.
