Just a note to say thanks to the MVPs - especially Susan Ramlet who posted
a link that was very helpful.
I've been battling with Office updates for quite a while now. I would check
and download the updates and attempt to install. It has been telling me
that the latest 3 updates were unsuccessful. This has been going on for
several weeks. -Today- I decided that I would resolve the issue.
I ran Spyware Blaster & Spybot Search & Destroy. I then ran virus detection
software. My system was & is squeaky clean.
Next, I subscribed to this NG and read most all of the pertinent posts
available.
I took the advice offered here & went to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304498 And
followed the instructions:
1: Delete the contents of the Microsoft Internet Explorer cache folder,
cookies, history, and the operating system temporary folder
Note: - I kept the cookies that were for site access to known accounts
(I moved them temporarily to another folder so that I would not lose them).
2: Install Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP
3: Delete the Office Update detection folder
4: Delete the Office Update ActiveX control
Note: - It does not say how to reinstall ActiveX control - I figure it
would reinstall on its own.
5: Temporarily turn off personal firewalls, download managers, pop-up
blockers, and Web acceleration products
6: Configure Internet Explorer security settings and add
http://office.microsoft.com to the Trusted sites list
**7: I save this one until last. - see below.
8: Disable script or proxy settings
9: Perform a clean boot on your computer, based on your operating system
10: Troubleshoot network connection issues
No issues known or found. (A single system is connected via a NIC card
to a DSL modem.)
**7: Identify and correct corrupted Office installations.
I did this procedure last as I knew it would be very time consuming.
I followed the directions as stated and did a "detect & repair". This
program would not run to completion and it displayed an error panel
directing me to a help file. The help file directions had me look at the
function of the "Office Source Engine". The "Office Source Engine" was
disabled for some reason. I enabled it and tried again to "detect &
repair". This time it ran to completion.
At this point I tried to do the Office update again. It worked flawlessly.
I'm Happy with the results and glad that I chose to read the advise in this
newsgroup that has been offered to others. It has helped me immensely.
The only think that "happened" (besides the fix) was Outlook became my
default mail program. A really simple fix to assign OE back in control.
I just want to offer my tremendous THANKS to all of you. You are unsung
heroes in my book..!!
