"Office Update is unable to check for updates" error

R

I have a system with all the latest everything XPsp2, Office 2K3, etc. I
have continually had a problem with office updates. I get the checking phase
40% completed and it comes back with the error listed above. I have had the
same problem for over a year (initially with Office XP) and it has continued
even though it has been upgraded to 2K3. This system did not have a problem
when it was Office 2000, but developed after Office XP was installed. Anyone
have any clues (other than what the error message says - that is no help). I
sent a question some time ago to Microsoft, but they never responded.

rhuddles,
Until the update situation is rectified with the SP2 upgrade, you could have
a look at this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304498&Product=off2003
Had somewhat of the same problem on a single new machine, cleared the
download (IE) Office SP-1 cache files, rebooted to Windows XP SP-2 install /
download SP-1 / applied updates.
May help...
