OneNote 2007 experience after a couple of hours

P

Peter Maddern

Generally positive

Love the new features, especially drag and drop of sections, pages and tables

Some glitches:-

Takes a long time for notebooks to be searchable due to indexing taking time
to index OneNote 2007. Perhaps this should be pointed out in notes with the
download, otherwise new users might think there's something wrong with the
application.

Having trouble deleting a notebook section - it deletes, then returns a few
seconds later?

The 2-way sync with OneNote Mobile could be explained better. I naively
thought all the desktop content would be sync'd over to the Pocket PC. It
took me a while and a lott of searching to realise that it's only the content
you drag into the OneNote Mobile Notes section that gets transferred to the
PPC.

Sync with PPC seems to have glitches. Sync sometimes fails with error
messages. And I found that when I was working on a page on the desktop
OnenNote and had the PPC in the cradle with ActiveSync 4.1 running, it split
into several partial notes on my PPC?

I am not sure what MS is going to do in this area. It would be nice to
have a UI element in ON that tells you how far indexing is.

Can you describe your setup and where/how you are deleting the section?

Go on connect.microsoft.com and submit feedback for this. My PPC is
2002, so I can't use ON Mobile.

See my next post above this thread. I tried to submit feedback to

The 2-way sync with OneNote Mobile

Pls permit a dumb question of a PDA-user who's a OneNoet novice:
Where can one get "OneNote Mobile".
Which PDA OS does it require?

TIA

You need OneNote 2007 Beta. It comes with it.
I always forget whether you need Windows Mobile 2003 for a PPC or if
that was the requirement for a SmartPhone. It is guaranteed to work with
Windows Mobile 5, but I think it won't work with Windows Mobile 2003 for
a PPC.

Thanks for your super-fast reply!

I have ON 2007 installed.
How does it "come with it"???

Is there a description somewhere?

Bad news.
My iPAQ still runs under PPC2002 and I can not even upgrade to 2003
because my phone module is not supported by that :-( :-(

There is a blog post on Chris Pratley's blog (search for his name on
Google).

Yes, you are out of luck. I have 2002 as well.

Thanks a lot.
It's pretty well hidden :-( :-(

Thanks for this reference too.
Already have the blog in my IE "Favorites" (in a ON notebook too
Yes, you are out of luck. I have 2002 as well.

Tried to install it. The iPAQ errored with "invalid type of file for
CE".

Thanks again

"Having trouble deleting a notebook section - it deletes, then returns a few
seconds later?"

I've experienced the same thing. This only happened with sections converted
from ON 2003. I had to delete the folders manually. Then they disappeared
for good. It seems that when ON 2007 attempts to delete a section group
converted from ON 2003, it doesn't delete the underlying folder.

Amos.

A few days after writing the previous post, I found that searching in OneNote
2007 didn't work even after letting WDS run overnight. I found out how to fix
this and will create a new post.

A problem of OE again (which sometimes not shows evrything)?

You have to do a manual install, very, very manual
If you don't feel comfortable editing the REGistry, stop now.

Here are the steps
7-zip - Extract files from the cab
PHM Regedit - PPC Registry Editor

1. Open OneNote on the PC and goto Tools|Options|Other and run the OneNote
Mobile install.
Note: The process will fail once the cab file gets transferred to your PPC
but just click ok and follow rest of my steps below.

2. Locate file OneNoteMobile.cab in C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\OFFICE12\1033

3. Extract the files from the cab. Then rename the files as follows:

GETTIN~1.004 --> Getting Started.1sp
ONENOT~1.001 --> OneNoteMobile.exe
ONENOT~1.002 --> OneNoteSyncDevice.dll
ONENOT~2.003 --> OneNoteMobileIntl.dll

4. Now copy the files onto your PDA. I put the files into a folder on my SD
Card so the path to them was:
\Storage Card\Microsoft Office OneNote Mobile\

You can put the files anywhere you want just make sure that you replace the
above path with your actual path in the registry entries below.

5. Put the following details into the Registry

**The three lines in the reg entries you need to change if your install path
is different are:
"Store","InstlDir" & "InstallDir"

Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OneNote Mobile]
"Version"="12.0.4017.1000"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Windows CE Services\Synchronization\Objects\OneNote Note]
"Store"="\Storage Card\Microsoft Office OneNote Mobile\OneNoteSyncDevice.dll"
"Display Name"="OneNote Note"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apps\Microsoft Office OneNote Mobile [Beta]]
"IsvFile"="\Windows\AppMgr\Microsoft Office OneNote Mobile [Beta].DLL"
"InstlDirCnt"=dword:00000001
"InstlDir"="\Storage Card\Microsoft Office OneNote Mobile"
"InstallDir"="\Storage Card\Microsoft Office OneNote Mobile"
"CmdFile"="\Windows\AppMgr\Microsoft Office OneNote Mobile [Beta].DAT"
"CabFile"="\Storage Card\Microsoft Office OneNote Mobile [Beta].CAB"
"Instl"=dword:00000001

6. Connect and sync your pda. You can verify that OneNote Mobile is
installed is you look through the Add/Remove list. To be able to sync notes
go into ActiveSync tools|options on your PC and tick the box for OneNote
synchronisation.

7. The easiest way i find of creating program shortcuts is to connect the
PDA to the PC then from My Computer choose Mobile Device. Browse to the
location of the .exe, right-click and create a shortcut then cut and paste to
/Windows/Start Menu/ or /Windows/Start Menu/Programs

After all this it should be working, good luck.

Does this mean that it would work under PPC2002 too?
Would be fantastic!
I cannot upgrade the OS on my iPAQ because otherewise my phone
(Wireless Pack) would not work anymore :-( :-(
