Open command not responding after updates last night? What to do

Last night Microsoft automatically updated my system. Now I cannot open
files, but can open a single document.

Same problem here. Not only can you not open files from the program (you
probably can if you click on a file from Explorer), when you create a
document you cannot save it....Nor will Excel open....

At the suggestion of one of the earlier posts here, I went back and restored
my system using a date prior to Microsofts updates (I guess I removed their
updates) and it again works.

Now the danger is if my system automatically goes and grabs the updates, I
will be back to Office being non-functional.

I didn't know either, but checked it out on help, and actually the help
information was good.

If I remember correctly, click on Start, then select Help and
Support....then select Performance and Maintenance, then click on Using
System Restore to undo changes... and I think it will guide you through it.

Hope this helps.

I recently encountered a problem with Office 2003. Whenever I try to open or
save a file and click in either one of those windows when doing so, my sand
dial just keeps going and going and nothing happens. Unfortunately, the MS
website where the error takes me is not all that helpful. It tells me that
there is and update for this, but I cannot find it. It does tell me that the
problem is with Office and not Windows on the website. I do recieve the
following error message when trying it over and over.

C:\DOCUME~1\WILLSI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\\WER472d.dir00\OUTLOOK.EXEmdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\WILLSI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\\WER472d.dir00\appcompat.txt

Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. It started yesterday, Friday April 14. I can
not open a file in word or use the "save as" function. We also attemped
to do a system restore back several days, but a box came up on restart
that said it could not restore to that date. So...I set the date back a
week, and same thing, would not restore.
We also re-installed Office XP several times.
This is a Gateway, about 2 years old.
Any ideas?????

Hi Eddie,

The issue may be from a Microsoft security update
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx
(aka KB908531) fixing a potential hole is interacting with some other software. MS is working on the issue, and while they don't recommend uninstalling that update, it is one of the options. However, you may want to try these steps first that others have reported having some success with.

1. From Start=>Programs=>Accessories=>System Tools
run Disk Cleanup (uncheck the box for
'Office Setup files')

2. Use Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the task manager and
check to see if in the Processes section if you have
hpgs2wnd.exe & hpgs2wnf.exe
running. If so, right click on each disable them,
then close the Task Manager and see if things work again.
If they do, you can use Start=>Run=>MSconfig.exe
and uncheck those items or you may be able to uninstall the
HP Share to Web utility from Add/Remove Programs in
the Windows control panel.

3. You may also have some luck with searching for and
renaming verclsid.exe, a part of the security update
(remember it's new name though <g>) as a temporary workaround.

4. MS support has posted a suggested registry change.
Method #2 works only for a currently logged in user.

Posting in a more official-looking way this time to salve PA Bear's
understandable skepticism. :)

We've determined that the majority of the issues people are having with MS06-015 / KB908531 are due to a bad interaction between the security update and a software component included with various HP hardware devices, including but not limited to printers, scanners, and cameras.

Here are two fixes which should fix problems caused by the interaction with the HP software:

Option 1 - Modify the registry
------------------------------

- (If you have multiple user accounts set up) Log onto the computer using an account with Administrator privileges

- Click the Start button, then click Run and type "regedit" at the prompt, without the quotes; this will start Registry Editor

- Locate the

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Cached

key in Registry Editor

- Right click on the key and select New / DWORD Value

- Rename the resulting value "{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}
{000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401"
,without the quotes

- Right click the value, select Modify, and type "1" into the Value Data field

- Close Registry Editor

Option 2 - Kill the HP process
------------------------------
- Wait until Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, or whichever component is encountering problems is in an unresponsive state

- Click the Start button, then select Run and type "taskmgr" at the prompt, without the quotes; this will start Task Manager

- Locate any instances of hpgs2wnd.exe or hpgs2wnf.exe in Task Manager, then right click on them and select End Process

(Note: Option 2 this may disable some HP device-specific functionality until you restart your computer.)

If your computer is not currently unresponsive, you should only have to do Option 1 or Option 2, not both. If your computer is currently unresponsive, you should be fixed by doing Option 2.

I'm very sorry about the inconvenience this has caused you all; hopefully this will get things back on track. Please note that MS06-015 fixes a critical security vulnerability, so it's very important that you reinstall it as soon as possible if you've uninstalled it. Please also keep in mind that disabling Auto Update will leave your computer unprotected even after we release security updates. I understand that this experience has been very frustrating for many of you, but I really must still strongly recommend that you leave Auto Update enabled for your own safety.

Last but not least -- if anyone encounters similar problems after attempting both options above, please post about it here so that we can continue to investigate.

Thanks,

Steve

I tried the steps below and they didn't seem to work, but the link you
provided below (
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx ) was very
helpful. They suggested steps (a bit confusing) that seemed to work.

Sounds like there are quite a few people out there with this problem.
Hopefully, this helps.
