outgoing email format

I'm using outlook 2009. Recently, the outgoing message format has changed
and I can't figure out how to change it back. I've not had this problem
before nor is it a problem on my laptop. It just started without reason.
Everytime I start typing a reply, the Paragraph symbol and other editing
information shows up. Also, the space that is usually allowed to start the
return email is missing - the space with the line. I have to enter spaces to
begin the email reply. I've checked my settings against my laptop that
doesn't have this problem and everything is the same. Any suggestions?

Press CTRL+8 to toggle "show formatting" on/off.
I'm not really sure what you mean with "the space with the line". Do you
mean your margin has changed?

I tried CTRL+8 and nothing happened. I know how to turn the formatting off
once it is there, but it just begins automatically and I see no place to stop
the automatic formatting.

As far as the space and line: up until this started happending, when I
clicked to reply to an email, a space was left above the original message for
me to begin my reply. Just above the original message is a line that
separates the original message from the response. I no longer have the space
or the separation line.

Thanks,

No such product.

Outlook for MS-DOS
Outlook for Windows 3.x
Outlook for Macintosh
Outlook 97
Outlook 98
Outlook 2000
Outlook 2002
Outlook 2003
Outlook 2007
Outlook 2010

Since you typoed the last digit, you could be using 2000, 2002, 2003, or
2007.

That is because you are Word to compose the e-mail, and you configured
Word to show formatting characters, like the backwards P to show a
paragraph mark. In OL2003, you can configure whether to use its own
embedded compose editor or to use Word. In OL2007, you are forced to
used Word 2007 (either because Word 2007 was installed or with the stub
of Word 2007 included with OL2007).

Can't tell what you are doing. Not well described. Might be some other
Word setting. I'm not a Word expert. Perhaps the normal.dot (called
NormalEmail.dot in OL2007) template used by Word to compose e-mails has
been corrupted.

I had a user at my company have the same issue. To fix we went into tools->
options-> mail format->stationary and fonts. Under the personal stationary
tab there is a section called Replying and forwarding messages click on the
font button and uncheck the hidden option under effects. This fixed the
users issue and we haven't had a problem since.
