Outlook and ActiveSync - error

After transferring Outlook (2002) to a new computer (both
using Windows 2000 OS), moving the Outlook.pst and all
other related files, and manually re-entering my many
email accounts, I have run into a problem in synchronizing
with my Dell Axim 3. When I tried to set up the sync
account in Activesync, I was given three choices, to
combine the items on the computer and the device, to
replace the items on the device with those on the
computer, or to not synchronize. Since the Axim has the
correctly updated information, I needed an option that
would let me "replace the items on the desktop with those
on the device", but no such choice apparently exists.
When I tried using the combine, I found that it totally
fouled up my calendar, creating appointment duplicates,
putting in cancelled or changed appointments as active,
etc. Fortunately, I was able to restore the Axim from a
recent backup, (I keep my professional appointment
calendar on the Axim, and data integrity there is
essential!) but when I connected again, Activesync again
downloaded the bad data to my Axim, instead of letting the
correct data change the calendar in Outlook.

Dell tech support helped me discover how to delete the
Calendar and other functions from Outlook (I don't sync
inbox, only calendar, contacts, notes, tasks and a few
files). When I tried it, however, I kept getting a
message that "The messaging interface has returned an
unknown error. If the problem persists, restart
Outlook". I restarted several times, even rebooted, and
even used MSConfig for Win2k to boot without the startup
group, but nothing changed. I still get that message.

I was able to get it to work on my laptop, (which I also
need to sync to as a secondary machine), by deleting the
calendar, etc, then doing a combine, which resulted in the
correct information from the Axim replacing the then blank
Outlook data. Outlook on my desktop, however, just refuses
to allow me to delete. Help!!! How can I sync my Axim
with this machine, which I need to use? Thanks.
