Pooling Resources - OLE or DDE links warning/problem!!!

B

Bobby

I currently have 2 MS Project Plans with a few over lapping resources. I
would like to link them both to one resource pool. I completed this
successfully using two simple mock plans, but when trying with my actual
plans which are quite complex (about 3000 lines each and about 200 resources
combined) Project crashes. It first gives me a warning stating "Connecting
'My Plan 1' to resource pool 'Resource Pool' will remove all links to
resources in 'My Plan 1'. Do you want to continue? To continue and lose all
resource OLE or DDE links, click Yes. To stop the operation, click No." At
which point I click Yes as I would like to create the pool. This itself does
not bring forth the error, but when I try and close or save... Project then
shoots out the generic MS crash message that asks you to send error report
and then restarts Project with a new project.

Hi Bobby,

I am not sure why you are getting involved in OLE and DDE with resource
pools.

Have you used copy and paste-link between the project files? What
version of project are you using and what did you do to create the pool
file?

Julie,
I am using Project 2003. To create the resource pool (which i have done
in the past without a problem) I just created a blank project, saved it as
'Resource Pool', opened my existing plans, went to Tool --> Resource Sharing
--> Share Resources. From there I selected "use resources from: 'Resource
Pool'". Did that for both plans.

Hi Bobby,

Well, your description sounds just fine. I am still very puzzled as to
why you would be getting OLE or DDE links warning messages if you had
not used copy/paste-link. It sounds as though there is some possible
corruption in your files.

Try walking through the steps outlined in FAQ # 43 "File Bloat? - Might
be Corruption" at:

http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie,
Thank you very much for the suggestion. I followed the steps to
defragment my files and it cut the file sizes in half. Unfortunately, it did
not solve my pooling issue. I will continue researching, please let me know
if you come up with anything else.
