Prints only color in a document, not the black/white

Knowing the version lets us focus on the problem more directly --this let me
check Word 2007 *and* the Kodak 5500. Doing that, I see that there are
others having the identical problem. Only, in the other cases, the letters
they're printing are coming out completely blank, since they contain no
color.

How many black ink tanks does your printer have? Are you positive that you
have blank ink in the tank that Word is trying to use?

If yes... as a work-around, you can use Word's free PDF add-on to create a
pdf version of the document, and then print it from Acrobat Reader (or some
other pdf reader). I would be interested in knowing if this works.

The free Office 2007 PDF add-on is available here:

How many versions of CROW are there to eat. Kodak sent a new print head and
that did the trick. I have many hours trying to diagnose this problem and
maybe a recap will help others learn what I learned.

The print head began to fail in spruts of work then no work. I replaced the
ink cartridges and went thru all the diagnosis on the printer I could, but
one. (main menu, print diagnostic sheet) Every one pointed me to a failure
other than the hardware. When I did the last one the test page printed only
the red Kodak name and nothing else. That sent me back to the hardware guys
that sent me a new print head.

The indications within application pointed to software. ie a "printer not
responding and ink empty" message took forever to display causing me to abort
the activity with cntl/del. Test after test printed only the color text on
the page, not the b/w. I have reloaded the sw so many times I can do it in
my sleep.

Using the "properties" set the computer into a loop. Software indication I
thought.

I hope I did not mislead anybody in my discriptions of the problems. If so
it was because of the intermittent nature of the failure. First it would not
print from Word and then on a shorter document without color text, it did.
Then it would print an Outlook email, then it wouldn't.

Bottom line. Kodak needs to clean up their act with this type of failure.
Probably beyond any human solution tho. I will forgive them if the printer
works.

Thankyou for all your time and assistance. Your questions kept me thinking
and stopped me from selling the printer as a boat anchor. 4 stars!
John

Am I forgiven?
