Professional vs Small Business

I have made many files while using MS Office 2000 Small
Business. I now have Professional. NONE of my Publisher
files will open now. The error reads, "Publisher cannot
open files from a different version." Does this mean I
cannot open my old files anymore? Is there a way to have
both versions of Publisher on the computer? I also
updated from ME to XP. Any help would be appreciated!!
Thank you!

The XP to ME update probably caused this rather than your Office change.
Are you logged on as an Administrator when you are trying to read the files?

Yes. I am noticed as the Administrator.

A question was asked of me regarding whether or not I had
Norton. I resonded and since yesterday I have received
more than 50 emails from Microsoft all with attachments
that have a virus. Any explanations?? Now I still have
the Publisher conversion problem and email viruses.

Is there still no answer as to why I can't open my old
Publisher files? It is still Office 2000. I just went
from ME to XP and from Small Bus. to Professional.

If you have Publisher 2002, you should be able to open all your Publisher files. Have
you installed all the service packs?
I had this problem early on, I resolved by right-clicking the errant Publisher file,
properties, opens with... change and pointed to the newer Publisher. This does not
work for everyone.
Go to the Office download center and check for updates, this may cure all your
problems.

You can have all versions of Publisher on your hard drive, create separate folders. I
have all the versions on my system, each in a different folder.

Please be aware that Microsoft does not send attachments with emails. All
the emails that appear to be from Microsoft are phony. One of the most basic
rules when using email is to be aware of the potential for virus or Trojan
horse files to be spread from attachments. If you don't know who you are
dealing with, don't open an attachment. Never, NEVER EVER, open an
attachment if it is with an email purporting to be from Microsoft. The email
is a fake. FWIW, I'm being hit with several hundred of these emails every
day.

Is that attachment a virus or Trojan Horse or what???

Fortunately I have not had one. Must be pretty annoying, as any spam is
bad, but bulk spam would be a mega pain.

I think there may be more than one involved - the SWEN virus and a variant
of the GIBE virus. The attachment sizes vary. The majority are 155k, some
are 142k. This virus broke open on 9/18. It appears that the victims of this
virus are those of us on Usenet. These are some of the sender names (fake)
along with the subject. I've received these in the last few minutes.

A google search on SWEN (news spelled backwards) will provide a lot of info.
Here are a few links I copied from that search.

Sorry about the attachments in the previous reply. Fortunately they are
harmless gifs that I didn't get completely rid of before posting. This
really looks great - I'm posting about not opening unknown attachments and
then by accident I put three of them in reply. That was a real DAUE. (Dumb
A** User Error).

I do NOT have Publisher 2002. I simply changed from ME to
XP and from MS Office Small Business to Office
Professional. Since that time, I am not able to open
files previously created. It says "Publisher cannot open
files of a different version." What is the version it is
refering to?? XP or Professional??

It appears that your computer thinks that the files were created with
different versions of Publisher. Have you tried uninstalling Publisher and
reinstalling it?

Silly question - are you double-clicking on the file name in Explorer or are
you opening Publisher and then browsing for the files? (I am fully aware
that it shouldn't make a difference but I've seen much stranger things
happen with computers.)
