Project 2003 - set duration in hrs (20) - over 4 weeks

Gitmo

When planning duration of 20 hours over 45 days (Start to Finish) the days
change and default to hours converted to days. i.e. the 20 hours becomes 2.5
days (Start to Finish) in the schedule. How do I schedule a part time
efforts other than percentages?

Gitmo,
Well first of all I think you are confusing duration with work. They are
both often expressed in hours but they are completely different
concepts. In Project the Duration field is the estimated time during
which a task is worked on. It is the difference in working time between
the task start and task finish. In your case that sounds like 45 days.
Work on the other hand is the actual time one or more resources will
spend completing the task. In your case that sounds like 20 hours. If a
resource is assigned at 100% (full time) to a task, then the Duration
and Work will be the same but very often resources are assigned at less
than full time.

Here is what I suggest. First, set the task as Fixed Duration
(Project/Task Information/Advanced tab non-effort driven). Enter the
estimated duration value of 45 days. Then either assign a resource at 6%
or enter the value of 20 hours in the Work field followed by a resource
assignment.

Hope this helps.
