Publisher 2003 'Save As' problem

Something weird is happening...

We are creating a A5 booklet (currently 36 pages).

The file got incredibly big because we were inserting so many pictures that
had to be 300dpi for printing.

We decided to break down the file into sections.

I opened up the entire file, saved it as "Pages 1-6" (Save As), removed
Pages 7 through to 36, saved it and closed.

I then opened up original file again. Removed pages 1-6 and pages 15
through to 36 and Saved As "Pages 7-14"

And so on. I noticed as I was doing this, the file was not getting
signficantly smaller. So to test this, I opened up the file I had called
"Pages 1-6", removed pages 5-6 and saved as "Page 1". This page was bigger
than the previous file (which had 6 pages!).

It would appear that each time I do "Save As" my file is actually getting
bigger.

Can anyone explain this and help resove this problem because the file is now
so big we are finding it hard to work with and cannot email it back and
forth (there are two of us working on it). Not only that, I am concerned
that it is getting corrupted?

Many thanks

We had to make the split in specific places because of the double-page
spread.

I did set up a Section break in each section which renumbered the pages.

The original file had got to around 110,000(!) so it was not feasible that
we could keep it as one - we needed to be able to mail it back and forth and
get it to the Printers for publication.
