Publisher shuts down

J

June

Please forgive me if this is long winded.
I'm running Office 2000 Premium.
When I click on any existing Publisher files, they open
but immediately close with the notice 'MSPUB.exe has
generated errors' etc, and says it's creating an error log
and I will have to restart the program.
Can someone please tell me how?
I'm not very computer literate but learning fast with this
problem. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling through the
Add/Remove programs (several times), I used detect &
repair, used the scan disc features, defragged, cleaned
out all my temp files, even used an Eraser2K.exe in case I
had some greeblies on the computer already from Office 97,
and then found that I couldn't reinstall 2000 as it was an
upgrade from 97. So had to reinstall 97 then reinstall
2000.
Does this has something to do with it - except it has been
running sweetly for 2 years up until now.
The only funny/peculiar thing that happened when I
upgraded and still does, is on only one file, I get a Font
Box saying I don't have a Park Ave Printer installed and
do I want to continue. Up until this problem appeared all
I had to do was click yes to continue and everything
opened fine. Now, as soon as I click yes, it also closes
down UNLESS I really quickly click on the page in the
background and 9 times out of 10 it opens OK. Yay, I can
use one file out of about 45.
If I bring up the wizard it opens OK. If I choose any of
the Blank templates publisher closes with the error
message and if I choose a predesigned templates it opens
with a message 'save changes before closing' If I click
cancel as if I won't to go on working it shuts down. If I
click save and do so, I can then open the file but it
still comes up with the save changes notice so I'm no
further ahead.
BTW I have up to date McAfee virus protection, regularly
scan for virus's and don't appear to have any.
I haven't installed any new software etc that I know of.

June what are the error messages you are getting?

Have you applied the Office 2000 updates which includes the Publisher
updates?

What version of Windows are you using?

Check your drivers. Update your printer driver especially.
You can test this by trying to open Publisher in safe mode. If it opens okay then it
probably means either your graphics driver or printer driver needs updating or
refreshing.

"MSPub.exe has generated errors and will be closed by

log is being created."

Yes, I thought I had applied all the updates but should I
re try?

Windows 2000 Professional
Thank you for input :)

Hi Mary and thank you for your time.
What do I do to refresh / update the graphics driver /
printer driver please?
Yes, I can open and work in safe mode thank goodness.

June the information for the errors is what is needed.
There should be a drop down dialogue window or something that will allow you
to copy the errors to the Clipboard and then paste here. That information
is essential to know what the problem is.
You can for a start try renaming your printer driver to eight characters or
less with no spaces.
It cannot hurt re-applying the updates to Office 2000.

Poor sucker being lumbered with Windows 2000 on a desktop computer, but I
suppose it is New Zealand and we need to make serious allowances for that.
I suppose you are just exceedingly happy you have electricity and a
communication connection to the outside world on the same day. Truly
amazing stuff an achievement in New Zealand. Do you want arranged a
computer technician flown in from Australia as you probably don't have any
left in New Zealand.
Do you need any torch batteries and food parcels sent to you?

Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 and older are critical about video
drivers. Usually upgrading (or downgrading in some cases) will fix
the problems you are encountering.

I would recommend is restarting your computer in 'Safe Mode'. To get
to Safe Mode, restart your computer and press "F8" at the beginning
of the boot process. Once prompted, choose 'Safe Mode'. Once in
'Safe Mode', attempt the same procedure with Microsoft Publisher.

If the publication works, then we will now assume the problem lies
within your video driver. Restart your computer.

If you have not already done so, you would want to visit the
manufacturers website of your video driver to download and install the
latest video driver that is available. It's important to note that
the CD-Rom that came with your video card will most likely NOT have the
most recent driver for your video adapter.

Popular Video Driver Sites:
-----------------------------
Nvidia
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=drivers

ATI
http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html

Voodoo
http://www.voodoofiles.com/
----------------------------

Search for the video driver that represents the model that you are using
and download the driver. To determine which card you have:

1. Right Click on your Desktop
2. Go to Properties
3. Go to the Settings Tab
4. Click on Advanced

Search for the video driver that represents the make and model that you
are using and download that driver. I would make sure you select "Save"
when prompted for download, not "Run". Typically many save to My Documents.

After you download the driver begin the setup. Use the following procedure
to change your video driver:

1. Right click anywhere on your Desktop, and choose Properties.
2. This will open Display Properties. Choose the "Settings" tab
3. Click on the "Advanced Properties" Button
4. On the "Adapter" Tab, Choose "Change"
5. Now you should see "Select Device". If your new driver is listed, select
that model.
6. If not, choose "Have Disk", and browse to the location where you setup
the new driver.
7. Now choose "OK". Be sure to have you Windows CD available, as you may be
prompted for this.
8. After setup and install is complete, restart your computer.

This should fix your troubles. If not, either contact your video card
manufacturer directly and inform them of the problem you have experienced,
or turn down your hardware acceleration. This will be at least a possible
temporary fix until you get a response from the tech support from your video
card manufacturer. The steps to turn down your hardware acceleration are as
follows:

1. Right click on "My Computer"
2. Choose "Properties"
3. On System Properties choose the "Performance" Tab
4. Under advanced settings, choose "Graphics"
5. Change hardare acceleration to "None"
6. Choose OK and OK again
7. Restart computer

(You don't necessarily have to go all the way to None. You could try one
notch at a time, but that will require a restart for each notch).

Post back if you have any further questions. Feel free to visit Brian's site
at http://www.mvps.org/publisher for some great information.

There is no info or drop down box available. The window
that appears just has a Yellow and Black exclamation mark,
the message as written in my last post, and a box to
click 'cancel' (the error log) or yes to close it when it
has done so.

Please don't send any computer techs back. New Zealand's
collective IQ doubles each time one leaves.
Food parcels would be nice thankyou. (Fortnum and Mason
perhaps? And let them know I prefer Cristal)

I'll try to rename the printer driver if I can find it in
the dark. Not allowed candles anymore since the last time
I set fire to my grass skirt.

Wow!!!
I'll try.

The only thing they would understand in New Zealand about the word
'administrator' would be the administrator of a jail/goal
