Publishing and the choice to use Open Web or simply File Open

I am fairly good with FP as a basic user but have run
into a few problems lately. I am trying to eliminate one
item that I have not completely understood and seem to
not be able to find any info about;

Does anyone know if there is any real difference to the
option to File: Open Web or File: Open under the
following scenarios (is one ebtter than another?)

I work on all my projects locally and store them in My
Webs folder. Once complete, I publish as much as humanly
possible. I know the pro's and cons of ftping so I'd
rather not cloud the issues with that one. Back to my
issue...

I have almost always chosen File: Open Web and selected
the local files but I seem to (on occasion) Get mixed
results. In many cases I start with a new site while in
other cases I am recruited to help someone and sauch a
copy of there site down using the import wizard to a new
folder. I never (rarely) publish to the local drive but
(nearly) always to my host server. It's always been my
undesrtanding that you should use the Open Web only when
you want to edit live on the server which I don't like to
do. So.. Is there a benefit to one way or the other??

PS. My recent problem seems to have occurred when I used
the import wizard to create a new backup and work in
progress version. Made a few changes and published. Of
course the server thinks that most of the files have
changed (no big deal) but, all of a sudden, all of my
file paths have retained my local C: paths insted of my
expeceted //images for example. I don't remember
resetting any parameters but it acts as if some global
setting has changes. THis site is too large to try and go
through and globally find and repalce every item. Can
anyone lend any help to get my links and image paths back
to correct on the server? Thx

When you open a web you can view more than one file that is in the web. If
you don't have more than one page in the web then click open page.

MD WebsUnlimited.com

RDB,

The major advantage of opening web and the files it contains is that the
links will be made relative to the root of the web that is opened.

Opening just a file makes all links within absolute links to the location of
the reference. I you FTP such a page it will then reference the resources on
your HD, e.g., a graphics file.

It also implies site management in that the web then, if FPSE extended, is
available to be published, searched, etc.
