resource leveling and vacation times

Trevor

Hello,

I'm back again with another question related to resource
allocation.

I have set up a master resource file that is separate from
my project files.

(1) I want to know if there is an easy way to replace a
resource for specific tasks per project file.

For example, I've got tasks that involve one - four
resources. One of my resources is going on vacation, I
want to replace them with another resource during that
period of time only. Otherwise, if I don't replace the
resource, when I resource level project appears to
continue the task when the resource returns (even if there
are more resources for the task).

(2) I have two resources working on a task. One is going
on vacation, the other should continue the task.
Everytime I resource level, MS Project splits the task
activity to continue only when 'both' resources are
available again, instead of allowing the one to continue
during that time.

(2b)How do I stop a shared resource from working on a task
on a specific date for a particular project and have that
info considered while resource leveling?

The task are usually set up as effort driven, fixed units.

I haven't seen how this is handled in the Project 2000
Bible.

Hi,

For vacation, select Tools, Change Working time. Select the resource name
from the calendar drop down list. Select the vacation days and make then
nonworking. OK.

When levelling select Tools, Level Resources then select the option:
levelling can adjust individual assignments on a task. That should clear up
both problems.

Hi Trevor,

For your second problem, indeed, the option specified by Rod is the
solution.
For your first problem, you will have to do that manually since no routine
in Project will automatically replace a resource by another one.
And even manual replacement is not an ideal solution since when the task
should be delayed for any reason you have to start over.

As for (2B) I do not see that.
When the resource is shared it is shared.

Hi Trevor,

We all seem to be getting in on the act! You might like to experiment from
the Gantt Chart view, splitting the screen, right click the bottom pane and
select Resource Schedule. Here, you can assign a resource to cover for the
holiday period by delaying his start date (enter the number of working hours
in the Delay cell) and assigning the amount of work to cover the absence.
To keep the figures right, reduce the holiday-man's work by the same amount
BEFORE clicking OK.
