Resource pool problem

Samantha Gore

My colleague has created a resource pool using MSP2007 and has it stored in
his working folder.

I am creating my own plan in my working folder, with MSP2003

Whenever I open the pool, it opens as Read Only, even if I select 'open
read/write'. My IS department has confirmed this is not a feature of my
directory rights. Whenever I open my plan, having previoulsy attached the
pool, when I close my plan it won't update the pool (supplementary question -
when updating the pool is it just updating resource hols etc or is it also
updating their work/tasks - I would presume the latter)

Is anyone able to advise what the cause may be? We both regularly save our
plans to new file names, which has been highlighted as an issue in previous
posts. I am running SP3.

Many thanks, Samantha

Hello Samantha,

When working with project files connected to a pool, no user should
have the pool opened read/write as this blocks all other users from
updating the pool. Is your coworker opening the pool read/write
before you are trying to use it? I also suggest that you store all
project files connected to the pool file in one location that you are
sure you both have read/write access to.

To your comment about what gets updated -- when a pool file is updated
from sharer project files, the assignments for that resource are
written to the pool. Project updates the scheduled work for each
resource based upon his/her assignments.

You should *not* be saving your project plans to new names without
disconnecting the older copy of the sharer file from the pool. My
concern is that you now have multiple copies of essentially the same
project file connected to the pool and may have, in the process,
introduced some corruption into the pool.

My suggestion: Work with your coworker to open the pool read/write
(coordinate this as only one can do this -- the other must stay out of
their sharer file and out of the pool file). Once the pool is opened
with full access -- choose Tools> Resource Sharing, Share resources
and look at all of the file the pool thinks it is attached to. You
need to disconnect all except the most current file. Save the pool.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Can your coworker with Project 2007 open the pool read/write?

Thanks for the quick response Julie.

My colleague does not have the pool open when I am working on it.

We will try trhe options you suggest over the next few days and feedback.

Breaking the links to old plans has solved the prpblem, the resource pool and
plans are still in different locations and that seems OK. My colleague and I
know to unattach when saving to a new file name now. Thanks.
