... Resource Usage View, filtering on start date ...

A

Az.

Hi;

In resource pool while using resource usage view I tried filtering for a
specific project to see all the resources/task assigned for that project.
Then I tried to view task for one particular month (by custom filtering
'start' field for august 1, 2007 to august 30 2007). This worked well...

Now i'd like to filter a resource and see what that resource is doing during
the said month. I filterd on the resource and then clicked on start field to
custom filter it, it doesn't show me any tasks.... (I know there are tasks
but the filter only shows the start date which is displayed against that
resource). What am I doing wrong?

Thank you
Az.

Az,
If you are custom filtering on a date field (i.e. Start), why would you
expect to see anything other than dates?

To get what you want I suggest you create a filter, (Project/Filtered
for/More filters), similar to the following:
And/Or Field Name Test Value
ID equals "Enter resource ID"?
And Start is greater than or equal to "Enter start of range"?
And Finish is less than or equal to "Enter end of range"?

Be sure to check the option to show related summary rows. You could also
throw in the Project field to limit the filtered set to a given project.

Hope this helps.

Let me rephrase my question....

I've opened resource pool (which is connected to 20+ projects)...
in resource usage I see something like this...

ID|Resource name | Project | Start | Work
1|John Doe|<resource pool file name> | 1/2/06 | 419.26 hrs.
23| task 1 assigned to john doe | <\\project path\file.mpp> | 7/16/07 | 4 hrs.
39| task 2 assigned to john doe | <\\project path\file2.mpp> | 6/18/07 | 3.4
hrs.
...
...

there are about 60+ task assigned to John Doe... what I want to do is to
filter john doe with his tasks in the month of, say, august.

So I filter John Doe from resource name and then <try> to filter on start
date, But start date filter only shows 'All', 'custom', and <1/2/06>. and
when I use custom to define my criteria it doesn't show me any tasks in
august (whereas I know john doe has tasks in august)

Hi,

Indeed, you cannot come up with this solution using the Auto Filter; I was
surprised to see that but yes, you are right.
Doesn't John's suggestion work?

A

Az.

Yes I tried John's suggestion... and it didn't work either... and I think i
know the problem now ...

Resource usage view combines resource and task/assignment tables to show a
combined view of resource and its corresponding assignments... I am trying to
use one filter on resource filed (ie. resource name) and the other from
task/assignment table (start field)... and I think this is what MSP doesn't
like... is that correct? if yes, is there a work around?

Az,
I think I understood your question, but I don't think you understood my
rsponse. As Jan said, you can't get there from here by using the
Autofilter. Try the custom filter I suggested in my response and if it
doesn't give you what you need we'll take another look at it.

I hope my explanation in previous post was clear... I understand what you
are saying (I think)... but I want to filter on resource name (resource
table) and then on start <field> (which is getting data from task/assignment
table) and that's where my problem is...

Az,
Simple question. Did you try the filter I posted? If not, try it. If you
did, then what doesn't it do that you need?

By the way, there is no "resource table" and there is no
"task/assignment" table. There is a view table, which specifies what
fields will be shown in a given view. The Resource Usage view is a
combination view, it shows resources and assignments.

Just for reference you might want to take a look at FAQ 51 - Data Types:
Task, Resource and Assignment, on our MVP website at,

Az,
Sorry, I wrote my latest response before I saw your earlier reply to
Jan's post.

Yes you can create a filter to do what you want but it takes an extra
step. Display the Flag1 field in the Resource Usage view and set it true
for the resource of interest. Then use the following filter:
And/Or Name Test Value
Flag1 equals yes
And Start is greater than or equal to [your date]

Be sure to check the option to display related summary rows, which in
the Resource Usage view are the resource names.

You could even use up to 20 flags, one for each resource and then use an
interactive filter for both the appropriate flag and for the Start date.

Hope this helps.

Az,
You're welcome and thanks for the feedback. I looked at grouping but
didn't feel it would give what you were after - that's why I came up
with my latest filter suggestion. Nonetheless, it sounds like you are a
"happy camper" so all is well.
