schedule a task to start after one task finishes and finish befor.

How do I constrain a task so that it starts following the completion of one
designated task AND finishes prior to the start of a second designated task?
In other words, how do I set the duration of a given task to span between the
ending of one task and the beginning of another task?

If I'm understanding you correctly, you are mis-using the term
"constrain". I think what you want is to setup the links. Don't
"constrain them". Just describe the tasks (as fixed duration, fixed
units, or fixed work), and set the logic.

Using your nomenclature, and setting up a simple three task plan, the
predecessors appear to be:

ID/TaskName/Prececessor
1/"A Task"/2
2/"One Designated Task"/[none...this the project start task]
3/"Second Designated Task"/1

Now that is really cool. I have worked around this in the past, but this is
much easier and cleaner.
Thanks
