So what's happening Milly?

J

Jake

For anyone who has been reading the postings on this site it is abundantly clear that there is clearly an enormous problem with Office XP update SP-3... What is being done to provide a proper solution

M

Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook]

Don't know - don't use Office XP. Why not burn a support issue with
Microsoft - it is their program, not mine.

Weren't you listening either?! Maybe I should break it down for you into
monosyllables.

MI-LLY CAN NOT HELP YOU. SHE DOES NOT WORK FOR MI-CRO-SOFT, NOR DOES SHE
HAVE A-NY CON-NEC-TION WITH THEM.

Is that better?! Now LEAVE HER A-LONE.

Morons.

.....As an MVP she might, or perhaps you MIGHT know, maybe even an MS person
MIGHT know when the problems are going to be resolved????

Since you are being a pest and asking someone to help you for free, who
doesn't even work for MS, I think it is pretty obvious what answer you are
going to get.

Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook]

Okay - here's the deal.

I don't work for Microsoft. My contacts within Microsoft are primarily in
the Outlook/Exchange group.

From the small number of posts here (most without specific symptoms being
reported) there is no HUGE problem with SP-3. Consider that there is a
legal installed base of about 300 million Office users (probably twice that
for illegal installations), and there have been, what, maybe a couple
hundred posts? Break it down yourself... and be sure to include absolutely
every permutation of third party software installed, non-default
installation paths, mixed versions of Works and Office, anti-virus plugins,
etc. and then ask why Microsoft can't solve EVERY SINGLE problem that has
occurred with the SP-3 download.

So, instead of asking me what is the problem, start uninstalling all of your
third party programs, and then try installing SP-3.

Dear Milly

I accept you don't work for MS as an employee.

Most people do not use these news groups - most people are not even aware
they exist.

Prior to SP3 I (along with others I know personally) did not have any
problems with Office XP apps.

MS charges a great deal of money for it's products, MS issued a service
pack, it has broken dozens of web sites (FrontPage - ASP) It has been
estimated by others that 1,000's of database elements have become unusable.
There are well known MS affiliated people who really know the software
environment who have said there ARE HUGE problems with SP3.

I will stop going on, sorry to have disturbed you. Maybe consider being
helpful instead of defending MS whom you do not work for!

She isn't "defending MS" - where on *earth* did she say she was?! Is MS
supposed to know the config of every system running Office XP?! I don't use
it (I'm running 2003), but your system will be different to mine, just as
mine will be different to Milly's and Milly's different to anyone else's.
Even when two systems are identical when they leave the factory, each user
will customise it to his or her tastes. Therefore, I can probably guarantee
you that no two systems will be alike.

Milly is very helpful - how do you think she came by the 'MVP' title? Bought
it on eBay?!

I suggest you apologise to her immediately.

M

Mettá

Cerridwen,

I am not sure what you are saying here, perhaps the software is not designed
to work with numerous configurations? If not then maybe MS could let me know
what configuration is required? The box simply says Pentium xxx or greater
xxx of ram, etc etc. All of which I have complied with.

The bottom line is neither You nor Milly seem to be able to offer a
solution, MS refuses to comment, this and other newsgroups are full of
reported problems with SP3, none seem to receive an answer?

In the hope of stopping this side show, please do not be offended, I have
posted to this and other newsgroups in the hope of finding a solution, not
to bash MS or those who "give" their time. I am simply looking for help. I
had tried to pay MS for this help, none was forthcoming!

Sorry to jump in here but
"Most people do not use these news groups - most people are not even awar
they exist.
with the Office 2003 release and as time goes by, many more people will learn of these newsgoups as they eventually migrate to newer software, 2003 and beyond.
With the Help/Assistance pane open there are several options for problems/solutions available to the user
Any new updates should be tested for the users/businesses systems before fully deployed. Or just visit your local newsgroup (since you know where they are) to do some research before you apply SP's
Milly Staples post was correct, backward troubleshoot your SP installation for problems. Specific posts and error logs are the best way to solve a problem
BTW, any help here is provided for "free" by dedicated Windows/Office users.... regardless of race, creed, or os

M

Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook]

I try to be helpful where I can. As I said before, most of my Microsoft
contacts are on the Exchange/Outlook side of things and not so much
mainstream Office people.

Many of the problems experienced with Outlook/Exchange have been solved with
updates supplied by the third party programs to bring their applications
into working compliance with SP-3. More will do so as they find the
resources to commit to the additional programming required. Microsoft has
been and is commited to working with the third party program suppliers to
ensure that the problems experienced with SP-3 are solved to everyone's
satisfaction.

I am neither a defender nor detractor (full-time) but I do enjoy the
Microsoft products that I do use and voluntarily provide support to the
folks who post about problems with Outlook/Exchange specifically, and Office
when I am able to.

Posting to news groups for me is a relaxation, not a time to take up arms
and vigorously defend or attack one platform/application or another.

Thank you for your attempted assistance but none is needed.

Misunderstandings occur all the time in forums where the written word does
not fully convey the emotion or intent behind the words printed.

I think that we may have different expectations of software when hundreds or
thousands of combinations of software, some intended for Windows 95, some
for Windows XP, try to co-exist without stepping on each other's toes.
Unfortunately, not every Microsoft tester has a copy of Lara Croft's Tomb
Raider II (DOS copy) installed to see if something in Office XP SP-3 breaks
it.
