start & finish dates

having put together a list of tasks, if i then decided i need to insert a new
task half way through, will project 2003 automatically update the start &
finish dates for the remaining tasks or does it need to be done manually

Why don't you just try it and see?

If the tasks have been properly linked, and you link the new task, the
scheduled will be adjusted appropriately.
