Task ID Number Changes

In an older version of Projects there was an option to stopm Projects from
re-numbering task. You could memorize a task number to make logic ties. What
about Projects 2002 or newer?

You couldn't stop ID numbers from changing in any version: except when you
Sort. Select Project, Sort and there is a renumber option you can deselect
that stops ID changing.

Alternatively:
Insert a Number field such as Number1
Copy the ID column to it
Do your renumbering/sorting/copy-paste etc.

To restore original numbers, sort by Number1 with the renumber option
selected.

I am positive there was a version I used that you could stop the
re-numbering. This would have been one of the earliest Windows versions. The
button was under Tools-Format-Layout.
I don't see where adding a column helps when your adding new task and making
logic ties all day. Espically when your working in a schedule with more than
1,000 task. Projects reminds me more of an Excel spread sheet rather than a
scheduling tool.

Well, it doesn't exist in the Project 4.1 version I have or in any later
ones. You could also use the Unique ID field if it helps.

If I could make logic ties with Unique ID I would jump on it. I may have 50
logic ties going to each "Area" turm over and 20 areas. When the ID numbers
keep jumping around it slows me down considerably.

I'm not sure I understand what your real problem is. From your last post it
sounds like linking tasks in a 100 task schedule is it? Project does have a
lot in common with Excel, but does a very different job.

Can you describe more fully what you are wanting to do more easily?

I would like to keep the ID number the same once it's in Projects. When it
changes in a 2,000 acticity schedule you have to search for the successor
task ID when trying to tie to it. If it did not change I could write it down
and not have to go find the new number. As an example I may have 200 task
going to ID 15. After adding a new task ID 15 may now be ID 100.

Insert the Unique ID column. There is also Unique ID Predecessors and Unique
ID Successors column available. Use them as you would the ID and
Predecessors columns.
