task/sub task not applicable in MS Project 2000

I have set up a Gantt chart that I use as my guide for all projects since it
includes all steps that I need. However, some projects do not require all
the steps so how do I mark these tasks that are not required for some
specific projects "not applicable" in the start/finish date columns. Instead
of actual start date and finish date I would like to have N/A. I do not want
to erase the task altogether but rather mark it not applicable in the two
above mentioned fields.

Hi,

There are lots of customs felds where you can mark a task N/A but not in the
start or Finish field, sorry.

Hi

the start & finish columns are date columns and therefore can't contain
"text"

the only thing i can suggest is to maybe have another column which keeps a
copy of the original durations and for the NA tasks, you change the
durations to 1min (so they look different to the milestones) and format them
to display as white on the gantt chart

however, i'm wondering how this all affects the successors to these "NA"
tasks.

Cheers

Hi Dajana,

In addition to JulieD's suggestion, you could add one of the Flag fields and
set the flag to "Yes" for the tasks that are not applicable to your specific
project. Then create a custom filter to show only tasks where the Flag = No
thereby hiding all of the tasks that do not apply to this particular project.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Or, why not create a template to use as the basis for each project,
then delete the tasks that are not necessary each time...

Don't know why, but that is exactly what she dpes not want to do - hence teh
question for an alternative

Hello,

By the way...

If you are worrying about the effect of the extra minute, you CAN put
duration to zero and then declare the tasks to NOT be a milestone in Task
Information, advanced; it then will be totally invisble on the gantt chart
and all links will be respected.
