Text copied from Word results in many hyphens inserted

I have a sizeable Word 2007 document that contains text I want to use in a
Powerpoint 2007 presentation. When I copy the text and paste it into a
Powerpoint text box I find that many hyphens (-) have been inserted
throughout the text. I tried to find and replace without success.
