Text in table only visible with "show/hide q"

I am working on a document created by someone else that has tables inserted.
If I enter any character in a cell in any table in the doc, the "show/hide q"
function switches to "show q". When I switch back to "hide q", the textthat I
entered disappears. when I swithc to "show q" text is visible again. Does
anyone know how to stop the switching and make the text visible ?

Use Format > Font to check the text characteristics - is it set to 'hidden'?
(If this is happening in all tables, check if it is being set by the table
style.)
