Trying to find a way to protect a resource list in a template

Hi,

We're using a MS Project Template to start off all projects and use the
resource list to calculate resource requirement projections across all of our
projects. In order to export the time-scaled data cleanly to an excel sheet
we've developed as a calculator, we need to have the resource names remain
the same and in the same order that they appear in the template.

Is it possible to protect the resource sheet so that it can't be modified?

Thanks for your help

Save your project with a password and have everyome not authorized open it as
read only. Not sure I understood the question.

The problem I'm having is that there are many people who need to access the
project schedule to update actual work values and % complete for tasks so
rather than create bureacracy by imposing passwords, I was hoping the
resource sheet could somehow be locked (similar to how you can lock a cell in
Excel so that it cannot be selected or modified)...most of the users are new
to MS Project so I'm trying to avoid reworking the resource sheet if someone
inadvertently changes it.

You can not lock like Excel. You can put these resource names in an Excel
spread sheet and copy and paste to the resource name in MS Projects. Sorry no
help here.

Hi Sherri,

You might try using the Resource Pool features. This means you create a
resource pool in a seperate file then link your template to the pool and say
that the pool has precedence.

When people go in to update the projects they will only get the resource
pool as a read-only file by default (if you want you can also password it).
Also make sure that "automatically add new resources" is unchecked from the
General tab in Options for the pool & the project.

Then when you do your Resource reports, if you use the pool you will see all
the resources and their assignments - try using the Resource Usage view to
start with (you might want to add the projects column as well).

Hope that helps, I use this method and it means I have full control over the
resources, though I'm not sure if it is the standard method.

Cheers,
