Unable to format picture

I am trying to format a photo in a textbox in Word 2007. I want the text to
appear next to the photo. The default is that the photo is inserted below
the text and there is white space next to the text.
I right click on the photo and go to format picture. I am given options
such as to keep the default, have the photo in a block or have the text
appear in front of or behind the photo. When I click on any of these
options, nothing happens. I have been able to perform this task in previous
versions of word, but not this new version. Am I doing something wrong??
Everything is so different in this new version of Word!

I don't use 2007 myself, but I am sure the process is the same or very similar.
Question: Is it only the photo in the TextBox or is the text that you want
to wrap in this TextBox as well?

If the photo is on its own then you don't need the TextBox.
With the cursor at the start of the paragraph of the text to be wrapped.
Insert your photo, size the photo as required. Change the photo's Layout to
Square or Tight, choose Left or right as appropriate. The text should now be
wrapping around the photo. You can use the cursor-keys to shuffle the photo
to exactly how you want it.

If the Photo and text are in the same TextBox, I don't think you can use the
Layout options in this situation.
Maybe someone else will jump in here if a solution is available.

Hope this helps.

I'll confirm DeanH's information for previous versions, and I can't imagine
that this has changed in Word 2007: you cannot wrap text in a text box
around a picture in that text box. If you want to wrap text around the
picture itself, it doesn't need to be in a text box, but, if it is, you
have to wrap the text around the text box instead.

Hi Crabby II,

You can approach this in several ways. If you're trying to have a single object that has the picture and text together you can use
a two cell table rather than a textbox, or you can insert a two cell table in a textbox and have the picture in one and the text in
the other cell (and hide the borders for the table). The formatting of the table cells can be independent of each other.

You could also insert a drawing canvas
(Insert=>Shapes=>New Drawing Canvas)
and in the drawing canvas insert side by side a textbox and a picture.
The canvas would keep the items grouped togther as well and the drawing canvas and text box in it can be colored and or themed and
the canvas can be autofit to the picture plus textbox/autoshape.

Perhaps you can help with my problem too, Bob.
I have posted several times as I can never get a picture into a table cell
even if I set the dimensions of the cell.

TIA

Is In Line With Text set as the default wrapping for inserted/pasted
pictures?

O

The default wrapping is Square; I have tried so many things but just cannot
get a picture/clipart to go into a one cell table.

I would SO appreciate a solution!

TIA

Well, that's your problem, then. You need to use In Line With Text wrapping,
I think, to have a picture actually in a table cell. Change the wrapping on
your picture and see if that helps.

Sorry about that - I thought you meant not to make it inline with text!
I have changed the default setting now and set the cell size to be fixed.
The picture still does not go into it.

What am I missing, please?

O

I insert a one-cell table and fix the dimensions, then
Insert | Picture | from File
Is this OK?

An example: When I have made the cell dimensions as required, put the cursor
in the cell and press Insert Picture File, the picture is inserted but the
cell is enlarged in width and only the top portion of the photograph shows.
(BTW in Tools Options Edit, I have default inline with text)
I just cannot get a picture inside the cell.

Make sure you have auto resizing turned off for the table, a preferred
column width selected, and an exact row height set. You may also want to set
the cell margins to 0" on all sides. If the aspect ratio of the picture
differs from that of the cell, you won't get an exact fit, but Word should
allow some white space rather than truncate the picture.

If this doesn't work, and the width of the picture should be the determining
measurement, then leave the row height unset.

That's about the nearest I have got to what I want - thanks Suzanne.
I don't suppose it's possible to have auto resizing turned off as a default,
is it?
Presumably, inserting a picture in a table cell is only useful when no text
wrapping is needed.

Thanks for all your help.

I'd have to say you're right on all counts. It would be helpful if Word
would allow you to create a table style with auto resizing turned off, but
alas! no.
