Is there a way to embed a video file into a presentation
so that if you copy it to another presentation it will
play

I'm copying/pasting something posted by PowerPoint MVP Chirag Dalal:

The Object Packager (included in almost all versions of Windows) offers a
way to embed sounds and videos in a presentation. There are some limitations
though:

1. You get a warning message about viruses.
2. The media is played in your default external player. This may not look
good during a slide show.
3. Does not work with the viewer.

If you can live with these limitations, here is the method:

1. In a PowerPoint presentation, select "Insert" | "Object..." menu item.
2. Locate and select "Package" in the list of Object types, click OK.
3. Select "File" | "Import..." menu item in Object Packager.
4. Locate and select the file that you want to embed.
5. Select "File" | "Update" menu item.
6. Select "File" | "Exit" menu item.
7. Drag the package icon outside the slide.
8. Select "Activate Contents" in "Object Actions" in "Custom Animation" for
the package.

You can embed just about any file in any Office application this way.
