when does physical % complete get updated from 0% to 100%?

I am creating a project plan, Some of the tasks are complete. My manager
would like to see physical % complete column updated. I have put in all the
tasks and given the appropriate predecessors. For all the tasks completed
upto date, i have set the corresponding Actual Start and Finish dates.
Inspite of setting these dates, the physical % Complete column shows 0%.
Should I go and update the physical % complete for each of the tasks that is
completed to 100% ?

If you insert the Physical % Complete field then hover your mouse over the
header you get a small popup. Click the hyperlink and you jump straight into
help. This field is not calculated, its only manually entered. The help
explains why.
