Where are shared borders stored?

Hi,

I have been using FP2000 to create a website with a
shared top border. I want to ftp the files for my web
site to the folder provided for me by my hosting
company. I'm trying to figure out which files I need to
copy. I can't figure out where the .html for the shared
border is located. Won't I have to ftp that?

Thanks,
Paul

Use File | Publish Web in FP. That will take care of all needed files.

ok, here's the thing;
the shared borders folder will be visible if you click tools/ web settings/
advanced (click show hidden folders).

but a shared border is actually written to the page by FrontPage on your
computer. uploading those files via ftp will not change your pages. things
will most likely get messed up.

you should just publish them with FrontPage. as a matter of fac, if you
right click one of the files (I've done it only with a FrontPage include
since I don't use the shared borders but should be the same) right click the
file and select "publish selected files". FrontPage extensions on the
server will re-write the content into every page it's been included into.

Hi Chris,

Thanks...that was a big help. Just out of curiosity, can
you tell me why you don't use shared borders? I'm new to
this, and if you think it is better to use a Front Page
include, I'd like to give it a try.

Thanks,
Paul

It's better to use the include page. this way you can put different stuff
on different pages. the shared borders were too restrictive and prone to
odd things like doubling of content etc.
I really like the FrontPage include pages and even use them when I can do
ssi like asp or php includes because the page looks more like a "finished
product" in design view. it's just easier to look at and since the page is
actually included into the other page when you save, it doesn't require any
effort on the part of the server.
still there are times when a server side include (ssi) is better. You'll
know it when it happens. ;-)

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the recommendation. Just to make sure I
understand you correctly, are you talking about adding a
line similar to the following?...

<!--webbot bot="Include" U-Include="top.htm" TAG="BODY" --
....I did this by going to Insert | Component | Include
Page, and I put it as the first thing that comes after my
opening <body> tag.

Thanks again,
Paul
