Why all these type of files ~WRL1762.tmp

Backing up some Word Document folders I was looking at all files and
wondered why there seem to be up to a hundred ~WRLxxxx.tmp files. They add
up to a few hundred Mb. Can they be deleted as some date back to 2003 and
the original files long since removed.

Appreciate help.

Just checked again and there is over 2,000 not 100.

These are windows temp files - created by Office for copy/paste, locking a
document (to stop anyone else editing it whilst it is open) and several
other functions. Normally, Word will create one locking file in its home
folder and two in the user temp folder. When all applications are closed,
this temp folder should be empty. So close all applications and delete
everything in the temp folder (you may need to reboot to unlock some of
them).
