Why do my images show up as codes in my word docs?

I use Windows Millenum and as of the past month, all my images, and inserts
show up as codes on any type of view besides preview. The pictures print
out, but I can't manipulate them and find it challenging to move them around.
I have plenty of memory on my computer but cannot figure out what is going
on. Any ides on how to fix it?

All help wanted
