Why does Word keep encountering an error and have to shut down?

WHY IS IT THAT WHEN I RUN MY WORD 2000 PROFESSIONAL EDITION ON MY WINDOWS XP
SYSTEM, I KEEP RECEIVING AN ERROR MESSAGE (NOT SPECIFIC) AND THE PROGRAM HAS
TO CLOSE DOWN?
