why the bar does not show the split I insert?

I try to insert a split in a task bar but all it does is increasing the
duration of the task without showing the actual break. Therefore I end up
having just a longer task with no sign of the split I want. Funny thing is
that on many other tasks on the same project everything works fine.

Hi Scot,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Right click in a blank area of the Gantt Chart, and in the Layout dialog,
check Show bar splits.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi,
thanks Glen. Unfortunately I had already tried this option. It still doesn't
work. As I said, on bars which I splitted earlier I can still add new splits.
On others and on the new ones I cannot. When I insert the split the duration
increases but the split isn't inserted at all. Moving the mouse over the bar
I can check if the split exists even if I do not see it. Sadly, the splits do
not exist at all. I opened the same file using a colleague's computer and it
works perfectly! So it's not a problem related to the project settings. I
really don't know what to do. I even tried to reinstall the software: no
improvement at all.

Hi Scot,

When you split a task, you're creating a period where there is no work done.
Duration measures the working time, and thus if you've ruled that some days
are non-working, the Duration shouldn't change at all. Creating splits does
not alter the Duration. Give us an example of a task, tell us how you're
splitting it and the Version of Project you're using. Are there resources
assigned? Have a look at a Usage view to see what's really happening. Are
there any Actuals data entered? What are the constraints set on the task?

I'm away until Monday, so maybe someone else can help over the weekend.

The project is very simple and is used only to monitor and not to plan.
Therefore at the moment I have duration but not resources and specified
working time. And as I said if I open the same identical file using another
machine with Microsoft project installed on it, everyting works
fine.(therefore sending you an example would be useless, I think). This means
that the problem is not in the settings of the project (usage, work hrs,
resources etc..) but somehow at a higher level. I asked the IT experts of the
company where I work and they still did not come out with a solution. I'm
afraid it's something more serious than settings of my project.
My version of the software is:
Microsoft Project Standard 2003 (11.2.2005.1801.15) SP2

thanks again

Hi Scot,

Project 2003 SP3 is the latest update for Project. Try installing that. If
that doesn't work, then I can only suggest you uninstall project, re-boot
and re-install.

I tried everything. Unistalling, re-installing etc.. nothing worked.
Then the IT support had an idea. They changed my profile and everything now
works perfectly. This must be a bug of Project or more generally of Windows.
This solution was found after I logged in my laptop using a colleague's
details and Project turned out to work perfectly well. That's how they
realise it was something to do with my personal profile.

thanks anyway for the support
