Word 2000

A little while ago, my Word 2000 started to act up.

- it claims it cannot open files of a certain format, but when I click
to continue, it opens these files fine

- when I click on certain buttons, it says it needs to install that
particular function, and prepares to install from my CD, but when I
click "Cancel", it works.

- it crashes now and then in the middle of my working in a file.

- every time I close Word normally, it says "Changes have been made
that affect the global template, Normal dot [which I have deleted many
times/Hans L].l Do you want to save those changes." I click "No', and
Word continues to close.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Word 2000 from my Office 200 disk, an for
a while, everythig was okay. Then, the same thing started again.

I cannot find this particular situatuion on the MS website. Can you
suggest anythng to try?

All of these are symptoms of a malfunctioning add-in (very likely the
Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus). See "Word prompts me to save
changes to the Normal.dot template"

Hello Suzanne:

Thanks for the response. I am always very careful to check that the
NAI Office plugin setting is unchecked, and it is now too (yes, I
checked :)

I will read the article and see what else I can find.

I can for the life of me not remember how to find out where add-ins
reside and what their names are. I have done this once, but .... Do
you know off hand?

Hans L

Sorry for answering my own request. I did find out where it resides.

C:\Program Files\ABBYY PDF Transformer 1.0\PDFT.Word.Tmpl.dot

Now, how can I prevent it from loading every time, even after an update
of pdfTransformer (I say this because I guess that if I delete the
file, it will be recreated after each update)?

If it's loading when Word starts, it's probably in the Word Startup folder
or possibly the Office Startup folder.

Locate the add-in in the Word or Office startup folder (for Word 2003, the
latter will be at "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\STARTUP" the
former as defined at tools > options > file locations).
Create a sub folder of that folder (the name is irrelevant, but I call mine
"Unused templates" ) and with Word closed, move the template into that
folder. Then add the addin from tools > templates and addins. This will
leave it available for use as required by checking the addin in that dialog,
but it will not start automatically with Word.

The method is shown at

Well, Suzanne, like with SnagIt and CrossEyes, the macro is not in any
of the startup folders, but in the Program Files (sub)folder in
question.

When I get the window where I disable or enable macros at startup, for
pdfTransformer, it shows this file:

PDFTComAddInMSO.dll

but when I look in Word's Tools - Templates and Add-ins, it shows this
file:

PDFT.Word.TMPL.dot

I do not know, but I guess that PDFTComAddInMSO.dll calls
PDFT.Word.TMPL.dot (is taht right?).

Hello Graham:

Lke with SnagIt and CrossEyes, the macro is not in any of the startup
folders, but in the Program Files (sub)folder in question.

What I guess I have to do is to put the trusted templates and macros in
the Trusted window. However, I must ask: do I have to put all
templates and macros in there, or just some? If so, which?

Word has, as far as I know, a lot of "internal" templates and macros,
and I would be surprised if I had to put all of them in the trusted
window. Also, I have made my own templates (fax, letterhead, etc), and
they are under the General tab in the New templates window. I guess I
do not have to put them in there either (I guess they are not loaded
when windows starts, so that is a moot point?).

If you can shed any light on this, I would appreciate it.

Regards,

Trusted folders in Word 2000 are: User Templates, Workgroup Templates,
Word Startup folder, and the Office\Startup folder.

Word uses your User Templates folder for the built-in templates they
are placed in a trusted location. And all of the built-in commands are
automatically trusted since they are part of the application. :)

So for the templates you create you can utilize these folders so you
aren't prompted to enable/disable macros. The Startup folders are for
macros, toolbars, AutoText, etc that you want to be made available to
any document you use in Word. The Templates folders are for macros,
toolbars, AutoText, Styles, etc that are specific to a document or
type of document.

If you want to be prompted to enable/disable macros then you can place
your templates/documents in any location.

As for your SnagIt and CrossEyes templates, you really don't want to
move them since they are using a COM add-in (the DLL you found) to
manually load the templates (*.dot files found under your Program
Files) when Word starts. They do this to make custom toolbars/menus
available to Word which IIRC customized menus/toolbars is all the
templates contain and their code is found in the DLL.

Since the DLL looks for the template in a location other than your
trusted folders you can't move the templates because then their COM
add-in will not be able to find the template to manually load it as a
global template.

I hope this answers the questions you had??

Thank you so much, Beth, for your clarifications below. Sorry for this
late reply -- I got a bad cold, got behind with work (translations)
and everything else, and have not been able to surface until now.

Again, thanks!
