Word 2003 keeps crashing

I am using MS Word 2003 on a new Dell computer. However, the program keeps
shutting down ... all by itself. Any idea why this might be happening ?

Most likely is a virus or a corrupt file. When is the last time you ran a
virus check? When is the last time you ran chkdsk or Disk Defragmenter?

The computer this is happening on is a week old. I don't think it would be a
virus problem..

What are the circumstances when it shuts down? Is there any command you give
it that triggers the shutdown and is there any error message before it shuts
down?

There is no one particular thing that causes Word to close, and there are no
error messages preceding. It just has a mind of its own.
