Word XP deleted text??

I was trying to get rid of a Char style in my doc and
some of the content disappeared?
Is this a known issue?
Specifically, I was using the style pane. My basic
paragraph style, called 'Docpara', had become replaced
with "Docpara Char". So I was painstakingly right
clicking on Docpara Char to get all the instances, then
clicking on the next instance in the text, then clicking
on "Docpara" to replace the style. One instance at a
time.
When I finished and saved/printed the doc, the paragraphs
I had fixed had disappeared on some (but not all) of the
pages! Meanwhile some on another page had changed to a
different font altogether.
I don't know how this happened. I don't think I could do
it again if I wanted to. Is this a known issue? Is there
a way to prevent it or tell if it has happened?
(otherwise I feel I have to go & eyeball all of my docs
again)??

Hi Tony,

I'm not sure what happened, either, but I do know you can't
get rid of a Char style by simply applying the original
style over it. For one thing, the two are linked together,
so any changes you make in the one (including deleting it!)
will be made to the other.

There's a macro on my website (in the Tips section, I
believe) that will help you get rid of a Char style by first
unlinking it from the original paragraph style.

And, in order to avoid creating CHAR styles, be careful to
always select entire paragraphs (or nothing at all) when
applying paragraph styles.
