Can I recover a file that was saved over?

I created a brochure, then later in the day created a different file. I saved
it as the previous file thinking it was something else, I need to get the
original file back. I tried a system restore but that didn't work, would
really appreciate some help. Thanks.

I know John answered, but system restore will find the files on your
hardrive that have been deleted (as long as you haven't reused the space for
something else)
Using the same name changes the file.
I learned this the hard way, too, and now sometimes save a project twice,
once with a 2 or something with the name. So, when I go back to it and work
on it again, the original is still there (with the 2)
I noticed in Photoshop tutorials I was doing, it says to make a duplicate
of a picture and use that (not the original)to learn, and do things with.
That way it won't accidentally get saved OVER the original one.
I know, this isn't Photoshop but that's how I got in the habit of doing it.
Another of those live and learn things.

I do not believe System Reastore does anything about deleted files.
It just uses a snapshot of the system settings saved at a previous restore
point and moves the system settings back to that time without doing Anything
to any data anywhere on the hard disk.

I've accidentally erased my memory card or deleted a file (that was on the
hard drive) and used a file restore program to find it. I shouldn't have
called it system restore, you are right, that is what restores a previous
setting. I mean the programs you can download and run and it brings up
what's on the drive you are looking for the deleted file on. Photo recovery
(or file recovery).
As I said, I used it on my camera's memory card in a USB card reader after
I deleted something I still wanted to take off. It took a long time, but
brought up every file on the card, even though I had erased it and it said
(on the camera) the card had no images on it.
Deleting and erasing just take the name off but the file is still there,
unless the space has been reused.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Just to clarify...the file described by the OP was
overwritten by saving a different version with the
same name...and would not be recoverable.

For recovering files that have been deleted...the
following freebie might be worth a try.

Yes.
it's always good to make things clear for those who might be searching the
archives.
I tend to get sidetracked (LOL)
The person asked about renaming a file and saving it and if the original
one was now gone and it is.
