Cannot open Outlook

I am using Windows XP home edition. I wanted to copy my Outlook
addresses to load them on a series of workstations at my office.
vCards worked but it was laborious. So, I managed to copy the .pst
files to a cd. Somehow in my manipulations, Outlook will now open only
if I leave the backup, mailbox and extend files open on my desktop. If
I place them anywhere else, including the Outlook folder, I get an
error message that the .pst file cannot be found. How can I restore
Outlook to its previous state?

What do you mean by "leave the backup, mailbox and extend files open on my
desktop"? Opened how, and what exactly are the backup and mailbox files --
are they both .PSTs?
