for some reason word 2003 won't let me copy objects or delete them without
deleting the text as well. also, when i select text, the object/graphic stays
selected as well. i have no idea why this is happening as i have never had
this problem before. does anybody have any ideas to what is wrong?

Sounds like the graphic is formatted to be "in line with text" and you're
not used to that. Or, most graphics you deal with have no text, but these
do? Try double-clicking the graphic and go to the layout tab and make it
"behind" or "in front" of text and see if that gives you what you're used
to.

Thank you very much for your help. I have sorted it out but I still don't know what the problem was because when I double-clicked on the graphic and went to the layout, it was already selected as 'in front' of text. I just turned off my coputer and turned it back on again and now everything is OK. I had probably managed to select a setting by accident! Thank you very much!
